Welcome to the Tater Hill Tavern, simply the most authentic early Shenandoah Valley ale room in existence. When you enter the Tavern, you realize that you have walked through a time warp into the year 1800. Sit down in front of the fire and have a glass of great local wine or one of Virginia's finest ales. Relax and read a book about springtime in Old Virginia while you sip on a Starr Hill or Williamsburg Ale, or take a look at "Old Taverns of England" while enjoying a pint of Fullers ESB. Maybe you'd rather enjoy an authentic Trappist Ale from one of the great abbeys of Belgium. Some of our guests make special trips to Winchester just to sample our Three Floyds which we almost always have in stock (call first please).
We'd also be glad to tell you about Virginia's finest wines while you enjoy a glass right here in the Tavern. We're always pleased to provide the best cheeses with the finest crackers, too. Tea-totalers are always welcome at the Tater Hill Tavern. We always have fine teas and the best fresh-ground coffees brought down from the kitchen!
The Tater Hill Tavern is open to our Nancy Shepherd House Inn overnight guests by appointment.
Many Tavern guests keep their own tankard, mug, or stein in the Tavern, but we always have extras.
The wine & ale cabinets. Our wines and ales are always kept closed away at optimum temperature in these old cabinets.

There is not a better selection of domestic
and imported beers and ales anywhere in the
Valley. This is just the tip of the iceberg!
There are always plenty of good wines and Champagnes to be enjoyed in the Tavern.

The Tater Hill Tavern holds an amazing collection of original artifacts found on site. These pictures represent just a portion of the hundreds of items found in the Nancy Shepherd House during the restoration. We saved everything, and yes, they are original.
The many artifacts include canteens, caps, uniform fragments, and other equipment from the Civil War. There is also a large collection of pottery shards, ironwork, clay pipes, marbles, toys, shoes, tools and equipment dating back to the late 1700's and early 1800's.
These early forks and knives were all found
in various hidden parts of the Nancy Shepherd
House and are now on display in the Tavern.
These old cups and old lantern part have been
in the Nancy Shepherd House since the war.
The butternut cap on the right was found with the
red cap. They are both original and not restored.
We have been told that this is a very early Fifth Virginia Artillery cap. It was found along with
many war artifacts in a hidden cavity between
the southwest stone chimney and the front log wall.

This early hand carved folk-art whirligig was found in a crawl space under the north end of the house that was added in 1800. It is missing its arms, legs, and clothing.
